Verbum Dei, which won the Santa Fe League boys’ basketball championship, is among four area teams awaiting the Southern Section playoff pairings to be announced today.
The Eagles, ranked fourth in the Southern Section Division IV polls last week, are expected to be among the top four seeds in the IV-A division.
“I’m excited about our chances because we have more depth than in past years,” said Verbum Dei Coach Mike Kearney.
Bell Gardens, Loyola and Pilgrim are also expected to make the playoffs.
Verbum Dei has won seven Southern Section titles, its last in 1979. The Eagles also made the playoffs in 1990 and 1991, but lost both times to Santa Clara of Oxnard.
The playoffs begin Tuesday with wild-card games. First-round games will start Friday and the championship games will be played March 5-6.
