DIVISION II-AA GIRLS’ BASKETBALL : Brea-Olinda Swamps Ocean View Defense
What was intended to be a freak became a flop for Ocean View, as Brea-Olinda, the county’s No. 1 team, eased its way to a 72-36 victory in the second round of the Division II-AA Southern Section playoffs Saturday night at Brea-Olinda High.
Brea-Olinda advanced to a quarterfinal next Saturday against Burbank Burroughs, a 42-37 winner over Crescenta Valley.
Ocean View Coach Ollie Martin planned on using the freak defense, a match-up that keys on the other team’s ball and player movement. It worked last year in double-overtime victory over Capistrano Valley. This time, his team was simply outplayed.
“I was surprised they came out and pressed us and played the zone and pushed the ball that much,” Martin said.
“They (the Ladycats) don’t have any weakness. Their players are excellent, they have outstanding coaching . . . We couldn’t stop them on the inside. They dominated the boards and had the advantage on the inside.”
Juniors Colleen Hudson, Nicole Erickson and Sara Beckley provided Brea-Olinda (25-2), a team without seniors, with experience and a sense of balance.
Hudson, 6-foot-1 center, led Brea-Olinda with 24 points and eight rebounds. Erickson, who was fighting off the flu, had 18 points, including three three-pointers, and four assists. Beckley added 14 points.
“Hudson and Erickson were the key,” Brea-Olinda Coach Mark Trakh said. “And Beckley off the boards was the key.”
Guard Tricia Lindquist, who had 13 points, including three three-pointers, played with intensity as she attempted to pick up the level of defense for Ocean View (15-12).
