COLLEGE ROUNDUP : No. 1 Georgia Tech Tops Titans at Metrodome
Georgia Tech, the top-ranked team in the Baseball America poll, scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the 11th inning to defeat No. 7 Cal State Fullerton, 7-6, in the Oscar Mayer Classic in the Metrodome in Minneapolis.
Fullerton (7-5) took a one-run lead in the top of the inning when Nate Rodriquez drove in Tony Banks with a single. Rodriquez’s hit extended his hitting streak to nine games.
But Georgia Tech (12-1) tied the score when, with a runner on second, Rodriquez fielded a ground ball at shortstop and threw in the dirt to first baseman Kyle Evans. Evans wasn’t able to come up with the ball and the runner scored when the ball went into the dugout.
The winning run scored with two outs on a wild pitch by Ted Silva.
Jason Varitek, who played on the U.S. Olympic team in Barcelona, had three hits and two runs batted in for Georgia Tech. In women’s gymnastics:
