FISHING / DAN STANTON : It Was Yellowtail by Day, Sand Bass by Night for Area Anglers

Two Los Angeles Harbor sportfishing boats combined for a catch of 191 yellowtail and six white seabass last weekend off Santa Catalina Island.

Anglers used squid to catch the yellowtail. The majority of the fish were caught during daylight hours. When the fishing slowed after sunset, the boats moved to a kelp bed where anglers caught limits of calico bass up to eight pounds.

Bob Artz of West Los Angeles caught a 30-pound white seabass. Long Beach fishermen catching yellowtail from 12 to 18 pounds were Jack Smith, Bob Branfield and Matthew James.

Calico bass, sand bass, sheephead, yellowtail and white seabass were caught at Rocky Point and Horseshoe Kelp.

Paul Emrick of West Los Angeles, who was aboard the Reel Special at Horseshoe Kelp, caught an eight-pound sand bass.

Tom Phillips, aboard the Matt Walsh, pulled a 12-pound yellowtail out of the kelp.

At Redondo Sportfishing, John Rudder reported that three white seabass were caught aboard the Sea Spray. They weighed from 37 to 47 pounds.

Sonny Bennett at Marina del Rey Sportfishing reports that a run of halibut has started in Santa Monica Bay. From Saturday to Tuesday, 38 halibut were caught. Most of the fish were caught on small sardines. Mike Nichols of Santa Monica caught a 32 1/2-pounder aboard the Spitfire.

Two skiff fishermen had good success with jigs and cut squid offshore of Rocky Point.

Tony Capeloto of San Pedro caught a 33-pound white seabass. Tom Garland of Wilmington landed a 30 1/2-pound white seabass.

The King Harbor Marlin Club and a group of Marina del Rey anglers have been granted permits by the California Coastal Commission to raise and plant white seabass.

Chuck Ulrich of the King Harbor Marlin Club said construction is under way for the building of fiberglass holding pens.

Three-inch fingerling seabass will be transported from Hubbs Research Institute in San Diego to Marina del Rey. The fish will be raised to 7 1/2 inches before they are released.

South Bay catches: Bruce Alden of West Los Angeles, aboard the Top Gun at Catalina, caught the whopper of the week, a 50-pound white seabass.

Stan Sato of Redondo Beach, aboard the Sea Spray at Rocky Point, was fishing a kelp bed when he caught a 47-pound white seabass.

Mike Young of Long Beach, aboard the Grande at Catalina, caught a 40-pound white seabass.

Scott Sawa of Torrance, aboard the Del Mar at Venice reef, caught a 24-pound halibut.
