NEWPORT BEACH — The April 2 sentencing hearing for convicted embezzler Stephen A. Wagner will be postponed, according to attorneys in the case.
Wagner, who is in custody in the Central Men’s Jail, pleaded guilty in December to embezzling nearly $4 million from Newport-Mesa Unified School District over a decade. Wagner was the school district’s chief financial officer.
Superior Court Judge John J. Ryan has asked that defense and prosecution attorneys meet to determine a new sentencing date, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Carl Biggs.
While Wagner awaits sentencing, officials at the school district and the Internal Revenue Service are liquidating his assets to recover the lost money.
