The Essential Right to Bear Arms
I was frustrated after reading Mike Kapowich’s letter regarding the right to bear arms (“The Arguable Right to Bear Arms,” May 16). Kapowich stated that “ ‘The right to bear arms’ was written by men who had hunted for dinner and were concerned about the British.”
That commonly held idea is misleading and false and needs to be corrected. Our Founding Fathers included the Second Amendment in the Constitution to enable the people to resist the government should it ever turn against them.
A review of the countries that have abused and murdered their citizens would reveal that the victims never had a right to bear arms or had been lulled into letting that freedom slip away, bit by bit.
I believe it is dangerous and shortsighted to give up or restrict such an important right due to the actions of criminals or the insane.
