Raytheon Lays Off 674 Employees: More than half the jobs are being eliminated at plants where the Patriot missile is produced, the company said. The layoffs will also affect workers who make the Hawk, Sidewinder, Sparrow and air-to-air AMRAAM missiles. All of the laid-off employees work in New England, most of them in Massachusetts. Raytheon, the nation’s seventh-largest defense contractor, has reported record profit for eight straight years. But the company said sales to the U.S. government fell to $2.67 billion last year from nearly $5 billion in 1991.
