Cerritos : ABC Unified Imposes Fee for School Bus Riders

Beginning this fall, many students in the ABC Unified School District will have to pay $200 to $600 to ride school buses, district officials said.
The school board approved the bus fee last month in an attempt to balance the budget, said Assistant Supt. Patricia Koch.
In Cerritos, 400 to 500 of the 1,400 bus riders in kindergarten through 12th grade will be affected by the new fee. Low-income students and those in special-education and bilingual programs are exempt.
Parents with one child riding the bus will pay $200 each year; two-student families will pay $350 and three children will pay $500. Families with four or more children riding the bus will pay $600.
Payments may be made in two installments each semester or by using a credit card, Koch said.
Bus fees and related cuts in transportation costs are expected to save the school district nearly $80,000, but it will still spend about $87,000 providing bus services next year.
A number of other cash-strapped school districts, including neighboring Downey, have imposed similar transportation fees.
