BIRDING FOR BEGINNERS by Sheila Buff (Lyons & Burford: $14.95; 190 pp., illustrated, paperback original). This agreeably chatty volume is not a guide to birds, but to bird-watching. Buff explains where to look for birds, how to use a field guide, how choose binoculars and compile a list of sightings, how to observe birds without disturbing them. A pleasant introduction for an aspiring hobbyist who’s never known quite how to begin.
