AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Mattingly Lifts Yankees in 10th

The New York Yankees knew it would not be good to leave the Metrodome with three consecutive losses heading into a series with the Boston Red Sox. Don Mattingly made sure they didn’t.

Mattingly hit a two-run homer with one out in the 10th inning Sunday to give the Yankees an 8-6 victory over the Twins at Minneapolis.

He had three hits and four runs batted in as the Yankees salvaged the last game of a three-game series. It was his 12th home run.

“I feel good about today, but I’ll walk right out of here and it’s over and it’ll be another game,” Mattingly said.

“We’re in a pennant race, and I’m trying to be up for that challenge each day.”

New York took a 4-1 lead in the sixth against Willie Banks on Mattingly’s two-run double and Danny Tartabull’s two-run homer, his 22nd.

Detroit 5, Boston 1--Cecil Fielder ended a slump with two homers and five RBIs and former Boston pitcher Tom Bolton gave up one run in eight-plus innings at Detroit.

The victory moved the Tigers back to .500, and gave them their first series win since July 5-7 in Minnesota. Since then, they had lost five series and split two.

Bolton (1-4) won for the first time since April 26, giving up five hits and one walk. He struck out four while starting for the injured David Wells.

Detroit took a 1-0 lead against John Dopson (7-7) when Fielder led off the second with his 27th homer, a shot deep into the left-field upper deck. It was his first homer since July 26, ending a streak of 11 games.

Milwaukee 5, Toronto 2--Greg Vaughn hit two home runs and Ricky Bones pitched his first career complete game to lift the Brewers at Toronto.

The last-place Brewers won two of three against the American League East-leading Blue Jays. Their only loss was an 11-10 defeat in 11 innings Friday night.

Bones (7-8) gave up two runs on seven hits to break his three-game losing streak. He walked three and struck out four.

Texas 7, Seattle 1--Juan Gonzalez hit his American League-leading 33rd home run and rookie Steve Dreyer won his major league debut to lead the Rangers at Arlington, Tex.

Dreyer gave up five hits in five innings and struck out six.

Gonzalez hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. Randy Johnson (11-8) hit the next batter, Julio Franco, with a pitch and was ejected.

In the seventh, Seattle reliever Brad Holman was hit in the forehead by a line drive and was taken to a hospital for further evaluation.

Ken Griffey Jr., who had his league record of 573 consecutive chances without an error come to an end when he misplayed a single to center, later tied a Mariners record with his 32nd home run in the ninth inning.

Kansas City 4, Oakland 3--Rico Rossy hit a two-run single in the fourth inning and later scored on Brian McRae’s single, leading the Royals at Kansas City.

Hipolito Pichardo (6-7) got relief help from Mark Gubicza, Stan Belinda and Jeff Montgomery for only his second victory in seven starts. Pichardo pitched five innings and gave up six hits and two runs. Montgomery got the last four outs for his American League-leading 34th save.

Baltimore 7, Cleveland 6--Mike Devereaux’s sacrifice fly with one out in the 11th inning at Baltimore lifted the Orioles to their seventh victory in a row.

With one out in the 11th, Mark McLemore doubled off the right-center field wall and advanced to third on a wild pitch by Eric Plunk (4-4). Devereaux lifted a fly ball to right field and Wayne Kirby’s throw home was wide.

Pinch-hitter Thomas Howard led off the ninth with a double against Baltimore reliever Mark Williamson and was sacrificed to third by Alvaro Espinoza. After Gregg Olson walked Reggie Jefferson, Sandy Alomar singled to score the tying run.
