Retired Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Capt. John Thurman has been named Sierra Madre’s interim police chief.
Thurman, 58, replaces Chief I. E. (Bill) Betts, who retired Aug. 6 after 17 years as head of the 20-officer department.
During his 90-day temporary stint, Thurman will evaluate Police Department operations and help select the permanent chief.
A former commander at the Altadena sheriff’s station and a past custody commander at the Peter J. Pitchess Honor Rancho, Thurman has 32 years’ experience in law enforcement. During that time, he also worked for the San Marino Police Department.
