Carter Hawley Hale Reports Further Losses: Severance and other costs to eliminate redundancy gave the Los Angeles-based chain a second-quarter loss of $42.5 million, nearly triple the loss of $14.6 million a year earlier. Sales for Carter Hawley Hale Stores, which operates 83 Broadway, Emporium and Weinstocks stores across the West, were $474.9 million for the quarter ended July 31, down 1.3% from $483.1 million for the same period in 1992. The chain had onetime costs of $25 million for paying severance and other staff-reduction benefits, and also took $6 million of inventory markdowns over and above normal markdowns, the company said, adding that it will continue to reposition its inventory.
