PREP WRESTLING ‘93-’94: SEASON PREVIEW : Capistrano Valley
- Share via
Coach: Joe Zeller (fifth year).
1992-93: 16-7, 3-2 in the South Coast League; didn’t compete in the section duel meet.
Key returners: Alec Laidlaw, Sr., 160; Scott McConnell, Jr., 145; Paul Miner, Sr., 152; Mark Stephenson, Jr., 140; Terry Tuzzolino, Sr., 171; Bryan Ysais, Jr., 135.
Key newcomers: Blake Laidlaw, So., 160; Joel Sherreitt, So., 103; Andy Tuzzolino, So., 189.
Outlook: The Cougars are simply one more team with a slew of returners, 13 in their case. Off a team that was ranked 10th in last season’s final county standings, only one senior graduated. Consistency shouldn’t be the problem it has been in the past. “We beat Canyon then lost to Dana Hills, a team we should have beaten 100 different ways,” Zeller said. The only question mark for the Cougars seems to be in the lower weight classes, where they lack depth. At the upper and middle classes, Capistrano Valley is as good as it gets. Zeller plans to have some wrestlers drop a weight to fill the lower classes toward the end of the season, including the 125 spot, which is empty.
