Coach: John Azevedo (fourth year).
1992-93: 17-1, 2-0 in the Olympic League; won its first State title--the first by a Southern Section school in six years and only the fourth from the section in State meet history, dating back to 1973; against Irvine, won its third Southern Section Division III championship.
Key returners: Josh Holiday, Jr., 145; Ed Mosley, Jr., 152; Mauricio Mora, Sr., 135; Dane Valdez, Sr., 125, State champion; Shane Valdez, Sr., 119, two-time State runner-up.
Key newcomers: Joe Calavitta, Fr., 103; Mark Echan, Jr., 160; Danny Robinson, Jr., 140; Matt Van Hook, Jr., 189.
Outlook: Azevedo is after his team to “try to improve, to do better than last year,” and sees no reason the Eagles can’t defend their 1993 State title. In an early test, Dec. 17-18, Calvary Chapel travels to Ohio for the Midwest Iron Man Classic, a national invitational featuring 24 teams, 18 of which won their respective state tournaments. Mosley, who placed sixth at State, is much improved; Calavitta, a junior State freestyle champion, has established himself as a young contender.
