NHL ROUNDUP : Capitals Go On the Attack in Victory Over Senators
- Share via
From the time they dropped the first puck at their first practice in September, the Washington Capitals were waiting for a game like Friday’s.
Keith Jones scored twice in Washington’s seven-goal second period, and the Capitals continued their domination of the Ottawa Senators with an 11-2 victory at Landover, Md.
The Capitals came into the game with only 92 goals, fewer than all but six other NHL teams. In 30 games, they had been held to two goals or fewer 11 times. That’s why Coach Terry Murray was so pleased to see the 11-goal outburst--tied for second-best in franchise history behind a 12-2 victory over the Quebec Nordiques in February 1990.
“It’s nice to get some goals,” Murray said. “A lot of different people stood up and did a lot of good things in the offensive part of the game, without sacrificing any defense.”
Nine players scored for the Capitals, led by Mike Ridley, who had two goals and two assists.
The seven-goal period tied a team record. The Capitals have never lost to the Senators, going 6-0 while outscoring them, 38-16.
Detroit 6, N.Y. Rangers 4--Chris Osgood stopped all 14 shots he faced in relief of Tim Cheveldae to lift the Red Wings at Detroit.
The loss ended the Rangers’ seven-game unbeaten streak (6-0-1), but goaltender Mike Richter’s club-record-tying unbeaten streak of 19 remained intact. Richter gave up two goals on the Red Wings’ first six shots and was replaced by Glenn Healy, who was eventually charged with the loss.
St. Louis 4, Calgary 3--Philippe Bozon’s goal with 2:34 left lifted the Blues at Calgary.
Edmonton 4, San Jose 2--Kirk Maltby and Doug Weight scored in a 94-second span in the first period at Edmonton, helping the Oilers to their third consecutive victory.
N.Y. Islanders 6, Toronto 2--Marty McInnis’ second goal of the game sparked a four-goal second period for the Islanders at Uniondale, N.Y.
Vancouver 6, Winnipeg 1--Dane Jackson scored his first two NHL goals and Kirk McLean came within two minutes of his third shutout of the season at Vancouver.
