THE TIMES 100 / THE BEST PERFORMING COMPANIES IN AMERICA : THE BOTTOM LINE : Times 100 Performers Symbolize a New Vigor : California’s economic stirring is evident in the success stories of its top-ranked companies.

Although obituaries for the Great California Recession are just now beginning to appear, an increasing number of companies in the state were already posting healthy and improving returns for their shareholders last year.

As a whole, The Times 100--a ranking of companies that turned in the best performances for their shareholders--rose for the second consecutive year in 1993 to its highest level since 1988 based on the median performance of firms on the list. While this alone is inconclusive proof of the state’s improving fortunes, some economists note that the results buttress other evidence that California’s economy is awakening.

“The man on the street might not feel it yet, because employment is still depressed, but we passed the trough of the recession, probably in January,” said Jack Kyser, chief economist with the Economic Development Corp. of Los Angeles County. “I think that by 1995 we’ll be able to say, ‘We’re back.’ ”

The Times 100 ranks companies by two-year average return on equity, a ratio produced by dividing average common shareholder equity in a company into its annual profit.

Topping the list this year is Inglewood-based Herbalife International Inc., a controversial marketing company that for the past several years has enjoyed one of the fastest revenue growth rates among publicly held companies in the state.

The dietary and nutritional supplements company posted an eye-popping 142.2% two-year average return on shareholder equity, nearly 2 1/2 times the results of the company in the No. 2 spot, Callaway Golf Co.

The score is also more than twice the 66.6% average return produced by last year’s No. 1, Total Pharmaceutical Care Inc., a Torrance provider of in-home drug treatments that has since been acquired by Abbey Healthcare Group Inc., the company in the No. 3 spot on this year’s Times 100 list.

Herbalife sells its products through a network of independent distributors, who in turn sell directly to consumers. It is a marketing system that has raised regulatory eyebrows in the past.

Eight years ago, Herbalife, then privately held, was for 18 months the subject of state and federal investigations into its direct-marketing arrangements and the veracity of claims made for some of its diet products. In October, 1986, the company agreed to pay the state $850,000 to settle all outstanding allegations, without admitting wrongdoing. State and federal regulators say there are no further actions or investigations pending.

While much of the company’s sales growth in recent years has occurred outside the United States, last year’s growth was attributable in part to strong U.S. sales of a new weight-loss product, Thermojetics. The product is based on a Chinese herb, ma huang, which contains small amounts of natural ephedrine, an alkaloid that constricts blood vessels.

Diet aids containing that herb are being studied by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. J. Mark Hattendorf, the company’s chief financial officer, said the review was not aimed specifically at Herbalife, adding, “We feel very comfortable the product is safe.”

Although Herbalife’s performance dramatically outpaced that of the other companies named on the list, the rankings offer ample additional evidence of the improving fortunes of California companies.

For example, the median two-year return on equity in 1993 rose to 22.5% from 19.4% the previous year. In 1991, it was 17.7%, its lowest level ever.

In addition, a total of 25 companies had a two-year return on equity of more than 30% last year; that compares to 16 companies posting such a figure in 1992 and 17 firms in 1990, when the state’s economy was at a peak, according to data compiled by Star Services, a San Francisco business research firm.

The other companies topping the Times 100 reflect the great emerging business opportunities in the nation and underscore the large part these industries play in the California economy. Five of the top 10 companies are in health-related fields, two are involved in computer software. One makes sporting equipment, one is a retailer, and one is a chemical manufacturer.

To be named to the Times 100 list, a company must be based in California and have annual sales of more than $50 million. Its stock must have been traded publicly since December, 1992, on one of the major exchanges. The company cannot be a real estate investment trust or a limited partnership. Its long-term, debt-to-equity ratio must be less than 4 to 1, and it must not have reported a negative common shareholders’ equity for either of the last two years.

2. Callaway Golf Co.: Over the last 10 years, this Carlsbad-based company has burst onto the sporting scene with its wildly popular Big Bertha line of metal wood golf clubs. These oversized clubs, whose irreverent name was borrowed from a German cannon used during World War I, have a large “sweet spot” that makes them popular.

Sales last year were $254.6 million, and profit was $41.2 million. The company is named for Ely Callaway, a former textile chieftain who came to the Temecula Valley, north of San Diego, in the early 1970s to operate a winery that still bears his name. After building a nationally renowned winery in what was a small, little-known grape region, Callaway sold the business to Hiram Walker & Sons in 1981. A few years later, he invested in a struggling Palm Springs manufacturer of golf clubs.

The company, which first sold shares to the public in early 1992, is making its first appearance on The Times 100.

3. Abbey Healthcare Group Inc.: Thanks to an ambitious decision last year to acquire Total Pharmaceutical Care Inc. in Torrance, this Costa Mesa provider of at-home care services is making its debut on The Times 100.

Abbey, which has 200 offices in 45 states, supplies medical equipment and respiratory, nutritional and infusion therapies for patients in their homes. It is the nation’s third-largest home medical supplier, and many industry analysts believe it will prosper from efforts by government, employers and insurers to reduce medical costs by taking such steps as cutting hospital stays.

Abbey’s roots go back more than 60 years, when it was known as Abbey Rents and leased a wide range of equipment. Last year, the company had sales of $380 million and profit of $14.3 million.

4. Cisco Systems Inc.: The Menlo Park company enjoys a spot in the fast lane of the emerging information superhighway. As a supplier of computer networking equipment--its hardware and software link groups of computers--Cisco has benefited from growing demand for products that help companies connect computer users within an organization and tie them into the fast-growing Internet data network.

Cisco likes to think of itself as providing the “interchanges” and “on-ramps” along the data superhighway, and it recognizes that as traffic increases along these networks, demand for its products will rise. “We like to say the more bits the better,” marketing director Jeff Paine said.

The company earned $241 million on revenue of $928 million last year. This is its second year on The Times 100; it ranked No. 2 last year.

5. Informix Corp.: The Menlo Park software publisher is making its second consecutive appearance on The Times 100. The company, which specializes in database software for businesses, enjoyed its best year ever in 1993, earning $56.1 million on revenue of nearly $353 million.

The company’s software is used by a variety of businesses, especially the hospitality and retail industries. Informix was No. 3 on last year’s Times 100.

The company, which was founded in 1980, provides software that works on every type of computer, from mainframe to desktop, through a direct-sales network and small computer resellers that tailor the programs to serve individual companies. It has about 1,700 employees worldwide.
