Jets Make Pitch to Sign Rams’ Terrell
The New York Jets made a contract offer Tuesday to free-agent safety Pat Terrell of the Rams and hope to sign him today.
Terrell will be in New York today to undergo a physical and meet with coaches. The Rams showed interest in re-signing Terrell, an unrestricted free agent, early in the signing period but have since backed off.
“We’re seriously negotiating with the Jets right now,” said Leigh Steinberg, Terrell’s agent. “We’re looking at a two-year deal.”
Terrell’s departure would leave the Rams without a returning strong safety from last season’s 5-11 team. Michael Stewart, who started 14 games at strong safety, has signed with Miami.
The Rams expect Deral Boykin and rookies Toby Wright and Keith Lyle to compete for the starting position.
Terrell, drafted in the second round by the Rams in 1990, finished with 29 tackles (24 solo) and two interceptions in 13 games last season as Stewart’s backup.
The Jets would use Terrell to back up starting strong safety Brian Washington and free safety Ronnie Lott, with a thought of replacing Lott once he retires.
The Rams plan to work out Ed King, a free-agent offensive lineman from Cleveland, this week. The team also named Pete Russell as area scout, replacing Jeff Beathard, who took a similar position with the San Diego Chargers.
