WORLD IN BRIEF : GERMANY : Racist Attack Was Reportedly Planned
Prosecutors said far-right German hooligans had planned the attack on foreigners that sparked a racist riot last week, contradicting police accounts that the clash was spontaneous. The ranking general prosecutor of Saxony-Anhalt state, Juergen Hossfeld, said racists had prepared an attack on a Turkish cafe that helped trigger clashes with other foreigners and police in the east German city of Magdeburg last week. Police in Magdeburg had blamed the daylong fighting on spontaneous violence by drunken gangs, who also chased five Africans through the city center.
