WORLD CUP USA ’94 / THE FIRST ROUND : Spotlight : NO PRESSURE, COACH
From Chicago’s Spanish-language paper, La Raza:
“Spain comes to Chicago with a team that many consider could create a great upset for Germany (today at Soldier Field).
“(Coach) Javier Clemente has changed the domination of Real Madrid for the more aggressive Barcelona. In the team competing in the World Cup, nine players are from Barcelona and only two from Real Madrid. He has improved defensive techniques and neglected forward development.
“Clemente is one of the most controversial figures to appear in Chicago. He is frank, opinionated and arrogant. His difficult temperament makes him unpopular to many Spanish fans.”
So they hate him, but they expect his team to beat the defending champions. Interesting approach.
