BERLIN : A Plot That Failed

In a year of mostly uncomfortable World War II anniversaries, Germany celebrates one with pride: the 50th anniversary of the July 20, 1944, attempt to assassinate Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler.
Chancellor Helmut Kohl will give a speech Wednesday to mark the day that military officers placed a bomb in Hitler’s East Prussian headquarters. It killed four people and destroyed the headquarters, but Hitler survived.
The commemoration is surrounded by controversy. For instance, the son of the plot’s leader is upset that a Berlin exhibition on the German resistance to Hitler includes activities of the Communist underground.
The government is issuing a commemorative 10-mark coin to note the anniversary of the failed plot.
