1994 Prep Preview: Girls’ Tennis : Six Teams to Watch : Newport Harbor
- Share via
Coach: Charlie Bleiker (ninth year).
1993: 23-2, 14-0; lost to Palos Verdes Peninsula in Division I finals.
Key returners: Emily Barker, So., will play singles and doubles; Katie Canright, So., will play doubles; Vanessa Godbey, So., ranked 51st in Southern California girls’ 16s, will play singles and doubles; Sarah Hawkins, Sr., reached Southern Section doubles finals last year, will play No. 1 singles; Lindsay Olson, Sr., will play No. 2 singles and doubles; Jeremi Teal, Sr., was to play doubles but broke her collarbone playing soccer and will be out five to six weeks.
Key newcomers: Ericka Nelson, Fr., will play singles and doubles; Brooke Taylor, Fr., will probably play doubles.
Outlook: Only Mara Colaizzi is gone from a team that dominated the Sea View League and Orange County. Had the Sailors not been played what amounted to a college team (Peninsula) in the finals, they would have won the section title. Without Colaizzi, Bleiker doesn’t have the singles talent he did last year, but he has much more depth now that his freshman have a year’s experience. Expect Newport Harbor to be the class of Orange County.
