Flanders’ Test Lands Lukas in Hot Water

NEW YORK —  William T. Young’s Flanders, undefeated in three starts and a leading contender for 2-year-old filly divisional honors, produced a urine sample that tested positive for Isoxurpine, a vaso-dilator used to improve circulation in the foot, after her victory in Belmont Park’s Grade I Matron Stakes on Sept. 17. The drug may be used, but only up to 36 hours before a race.

Barring a successful appeal, the filly will be disqualified from the Matron’s winner’s share of $64,740.

In addition, trainer D. Wayne Lukas faces a 45-day suspension that would become 60 days if his appeal is thrown out. Lukas is pinning his hopes for a successful appeal on the outcome of a test of a sample of the urine that was sent to another lab.

The New York State Racing and Wagering Board has not set a date for the appeal hearing and Lukas can work until its heard.

Reached at his barn at Churchill Downs, Lukas was puzzled.

“She doesn’t get any medication,” he said. “She doesn’t need any the way she runs.”
