COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Remy’s Eighth-Place Finish Leads OCC in Invitational

Orange Coast’s Erin Remy took eighth place to lead the Pirates to a 13th-place finish in the Johnie O Invitational at Moorpark College, good enough to qualify for the State cross-country meet.
Remy’s time of 20 minutes 9 seconds was 1:01 behind Riverside’s Charlotte Mayock, who took the individual title. The Pirates’ next finisher was Elizabeth Pelayo in 21st place (20:53).
Other OCC finishers included Heather Davidson (22:43) in 84th place, Andrea Busi (23:56) in 109th, Sindy Schneck (23:37) in 116th and Ellen Kramer (24:05) in 128th place.
San Diego Mesa placed first with 71 points, followed by El Camino (96), Citrus (147), defending State champion Irvine Valley (159) and Mt. San Antonio (209).
College of the Canyons finished 10th in the team standings with 321 points, followed by Antelope Valley with 331. Orange Coast finished with 341 points.
The top eight teams in the men’s and women’s races automatically advanced to the State meet.
In the men’s race, Riverside, propelled by the 1-2-4-6 finish of Wilhelm Gidabuday, Aberrazak Merchoud, Cosmas Nguku and Cruz Gallegos, won the title with 76 points. Second was Mt. San Antonio (104), followed by Glendale (117), San Diego Mesa (136) and El Camino (138). Orange Coast totaled 410 points.
