Cunningham Still Is a Raider Coach but Has Freedom to Seek Another Post
Gunther Cunningham remains a member of the Raider coaching staff--at least for a little while. And if he leaves, it probably will be of his own choice.
Cunningham’s name was linked in a report Friday with three fellow members of the Raider defensive coaching staff--Ray Hamilton, Jack Stanton and Odis McKinney--who were fired Thursday.
Cunningham has not been fired, but is, with the Raiders’ consent, negotiating with several teams for a job as a defensive coordinator.
“I would like to be a coordinator again,” said Cunningham, 46. “I have received permission from the Raiders to pursue that position and I appreciate that.”
Cunningham had been the Raiders’ defensive coordinator but lost the job to John Fox after the 1993 season. He was a defensive line coach in 1994.
