NATION IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : U.S. to Pay Victims of Botched Sting

A judge ordered the government to pay $871,000 to six people arrested and beaten in Honduras during a botched U.S. drug sting in 1991. The three crew members and three passengers bound for Miami from Belize had no idea U.S. drug agents had planted 90 pounds of cocaine on their plane during a stopover in Honduras. Honduran officials also knew nothing of the planned sting. “The incarceration of the plaintiffs was directly caused by the action of the U.S. government,” U.S. District Judge Federico Moreno said in his ruling.
