In the consolation championship of the Woodbridge softball tournament:
Pacifica 3, La Habra 0--The arm of Amanda Freed and the bats of Toni Mascarenas and Valerie Downen were the difference for Pacifica at Harvard Park in Irvine.
Freed (10-0) pitched a one-hitter and struck out seven, Mascarenas went three for three with two runs batted in and Downen went four for four. The Mariners (18-2) are ranked second in the county.
“It’s like having (Nolan) Ryan and (Roger) Clemens on the same team,” Pacifica Coach Rob Weil said of Freed and Mascarenas (8-2). Both have earned-run averages below 0.40.
“Pitching has been our strength all year and when we can score a couple of runs, we have an excellent chance of winning,” Weil said.
Pacifica broke the scoreless tie in the fifth inning. With two outs, Downen singled, Autumn Gwinner walked and Mascarenas singled to center, driving in Downen with Gwinner going to third and Mascarenas to second on the throw. Gwinner scored when the home plate umpire ruled there was obstruction at third by La Habra’s third baseman Lauren Roccio.
The Mariners scored again in the seventh, when Mascarenas doubled to left, driving in Downen, who also doubled.
Freed kept La Habra (13-4) in check all afternoon, giving up only a fifth-inning single by center fielder Brooke Koehler. Koehler was the only Highlander to reach second base.
