Kennedy d. Narbonne, 15-8, 15-3, 15-4--The No. 4-seeded Golden Cougars (13-1) defeated the No. 8-seeded Gauchos in a City Section 4-A playoff match at Kennedy.

Mike Whitmore had eight kills and five blocks and Michael Paloma had 25 assists for Kennedy.

Westchester d. Chatsworth 15-7, 15-12, 18-16--The visiting Chancellors fell in a first-round 3-A match at Westchester.

Van Nuys d. Verdugo Hills, 15-1, 15-2, 15-4--The No. 2-seeded Wolves (14-0) disposed of visiting Verdugo Hills in 40 minutes in a first-round 3-A match.

Van Nuys used early leads to put the games out of reach, going ahead, 8-0, in the first game and 9-0 in the second game.

Ricardo Hernandez led the attack with eight kills and three blocks and Allen Chiu added nine kills and four aces.

Marshall d. North Hollywood, 15-10, 15-4, 15-2--The Barristers, the No. 1-seeded team in the 3-A, had no trouble with the Huskies in a first-round match at Marshall.

Fairfax d. Grant, 15-5, 11-15, 15-13, 15-6--The Lancers extended the Lions to four games in a first-round 3-A match at Fairfax.

Sylmar d. Hamilton, 15-5, 15-9, 15-11--The No. 4-seeded Spartans (12-2) beat the No. 13-seeded Yankees (4-10) in a first-round 3-A match at Sylmar.

Edward Terry had 19 kills and 15 digs, Melvyn Lemus had 10 kills and 15 digs, and Matt Garcia had 27 assists for Sylmar.
