Fujitsu Unit Plans Major Oregon Plant Expansion: Fujitsu Microelectronics, a unit of Fujitsu Ltd. of Japan, plans a $1-billion expansion that will nearly double employment at its chip factory in suburban Portland to 955 workers by 1998. The expanded facility will make next-generation 16-megabit memory chips for personal computers and other electronic devices, said Leonard J. Bergstein, a lobbyist hired by Fujitsu. Fujitsu currently employs 510 people at the facility in Gresham. Employment for the new plant will start at 200 and grow to 445, Bergstein said. The first phase of construction is to be completed at the end of 1996.
