WORLD IN BRIEF : GAZA STRIP : Palestinians Say Veto Shows U.S. Is Biased
Palestinians accused the United States of bias after it vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution declaring Israel’s confiscation of Arab land in Jerusalem invalid. “The United States has lost its status as an honest broker,” said Marwan Kanafani, a spokesman for Palestine Liberation Organization Chairman Yasser Arafat. The Security Council had voted 14-1 in favor of the measure. The United States--arguing that the status of Jerusalem must be decided in direct Israeli-Palestinian talks--used its first veto in five years to block the move with its lone vote.
