Sybase Inc. said its second-quarter profit from operations fell 58%, further than some Wall Street analysts expected, on slowing sales of its database software.

The Emeryville, Calif.-based company said its profit from operations fell to $6.8 million, or 10 cents a share, from net income of $17.9 million, or 24 cents, a year earlier.
