1995 PREP PREVIEW: GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL : HUNTINGTON BEACH
Coach: Rocky Ciarelli (13th year).
1994: 19-5 overall, 8-2 in the Sunset League; in their best season in school history, the Oilers advanced to the Southern Section Division I semifinals and to the State Division II championship game.
Key returners: Dana Atkinson, 5-8, outside hitter, Jr.; Allison Ciarelli, 5-8, setter, Jr.; Nicole Gale, 5-7, defensive specialist, Sr.; Jill Meyers, 6-0, middle blocker, Sr.; Melissa Wendt, 6-2, outside hitter, Sr.; Keely Ziegler, 5-11, opposite, Sr.
Key newcomers: Lori Daedelow, 5-10, middle blocker, So.; Julie Hinsche, 5-10, middle blocker, Jr.; Alissa Moss, 5-7, setter, So.; Lauren Wilson, 5-8, outside hitter, So.
Outlook: Huntington Beach is the overwhelming favorite to win a state championship this season, but Ciarelli is skeptical: “Everybody has to play everybody and we have a pretty tough schedule,” he said. “It’s nice for the kids and it’s good for the school, but . . . there is a long season ahead of us.” As long as Wendt stays healthy, however, the Oilers probably will breeze past most of their opponents. Wendt had a game-high 23 kills and 13 digs in the state final last season.
