* Your article (“Court Rivals,” Sept. 5) profiling the lawyers on opposing sides of the Orange County civil case being brought against Merrill Lynch illustrates why the legal profession is held by many in such low esteem.
It appears from the article that [J. Michael] Hennigan and [James] Mercer were hired without being interviewed. The announcement of this decision was made by Orange County’s chief bankruptcy lawyer, Bruce Bennett. Hennigan and Mercer left their existing firm and will not share the lucrative legal fees with their former partners. However, they did form a new legal partnership and brought in one new partner, Bruce Bennett, the [county’s] bankruptcy lawyer.
