Hancock Wins U.S. Speedway Championship

COSTA MESA — Costa Mesa’s Greg Hancock defeated Bobby Schwartz, also of Costa Mesa, in a runoff to win the 27th U.S. National Speedway Championships in front of a crowd of 7,104 Saturday night at the Orange County Fairgrounds.
Hancock captured his first title in only his second appearance at the nationals. Hancock and two-time champion Schwartz were tied with 13 points each.
Riverside’s Steve Lucero finished third with 12 points and Charlie Venegas, of San Bernardino, was fourth with 11.
La Habra’s Rob Pfetzing, making his 10th appearance at the nationals, was fifth with nine points.
Josh Larsen, also from Costa Mesa, finished sixth with eight points. Larsen was second at last year’s nationals.
