Mary Austin lived in Independence only a few years around the turn of the century, not from 1868 to 1934 as mentioned in “Into Inyo” (Weekend Escape, Aug. 27). She left shortly after her book, “The Land of Little Rain” (from which the quote on the plaque was taken) was published in 1903.
