NHL ROUNDUP : Avalanche Beats Stars for Fifth Win in a Row
Joe Sakic had two goals and two assists and Jocelyn Thibault stopped 21 shots Monday night to send the Colorado Avalanche to its fifth consecutive victory, 6-1 over the Stars at Dallas.
Sakic scored a first-period power-play goal and added an insurance score in the third period. He also set up goals by Craig Wolanin and Valeri Kamensky.
Claude Lemieux added a third-period goal for the Avalanche, which improved to 7-3-1. Sakic scored his eighth of the year past Dallas goalie Darcy Wakaluk at 4:46 of the third period, and Adam Deadmarsh added his fifth of the year with 4:53 to play.
Thibault came within 11 seconds of registering his second career shutout before Brent Gilchrist got his second goal of the season.
Winnipeg 3, Detroit 2--The Jets moved to the top of the Central Division with the victory over the Red Wings at Winnipeg.
Teemu Selanne broke a 2-2 tie at 12:31 of the second period with his fifth goal of the season. Teen-aged rookie Deron Quint assisted on the goal, his fifth of the season.
Jet goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin was superb after that, stopping the Red Wings on three power plays in the third period.
Vancouver 4, San Jose 3--Second-period goals by defensemen Dana Murzyn and Jyrki Lumme led the Canucks to their first home victory of the season.
The Sharks are 0-6-3 playing home or away.
NHL Notes
The Mighty Ducks acquired defenseman Bobby Marshall from the Calgary Flames for center Jarrod Skalde. Marshall, 23, was assigned to the Ducks’ primary development affiliate, the Baltimore Bandits. Skalde, 24, was obtained by the Ducks in the 1993 expansion draft and had been playing in Baltimore this season.
