Charles Scribner Jr., 74, who headed his family’s book publishing company for 32 years. He succeeded his father as president of Charles Scribner’s Sons in 1952 and remained until 1984 when the company started by his great-grandfather in 1846 was sold to Macmillan. Scribner was Ernest Hemingway’s personal editor during the writer’s late career and in 1974 edited a book, “The Enduring Hemingway: An Anthology of a Lifetime in Literature.” Complaining that as a publisher he had little time to write, Scribner did become author of some children’s pieces and two books of memoirs, “In the Company of Writers: A Life in Publishing” in 1991 and “In the Web of Ideas: the Education of a Publisher” in 1993. On Saturday in New York of pneumonia after a long degenerative neurological disorder.
