MONTEBELLO — Topi Sanchez rushed for 221 yards and three touchdowns in 34 carries to lead St. Bonaventure High over Cantwell-Sacred Heart, 28-20, in a Southern Section Division IX first-round playoff game Friday night.
Sanchez scored his third touchdown on a 15-yard run with 54 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to preserve the victory for the visiting Seraphs (8-3).
The final scoring drive was set up by a Sal Germann interception with 5 minutes 33 seconds left. Leading, 22-20, the Seraphs drove 58 yards in 13 plays to put the game away.
Quarterback Teohua Sanchez, Topi’s brother, completed 11 of 17 passes for 147 yards and scored on a one-yard run.
The Sanchez combination accounted for all four Seraph touchdowns and all but one of St. Bonaventure’s 373 yards.
The other yard came on a run by David Bernal when Topi Sanchez went to the sidelines for one play.
“Topi Sanchez has been such a quality back throughout his career,” Seraph Coach Jon Mack said.
