CHORAL DIRECTOR: Geraldine (Gerry) Biggs McGrath will be honored for her 40 years as music minister and choral director at St. John Baptist de la Salle in a reception Sunday at the Granada Hills parish after the noon Mass.
McGrath directed the parish’s choir when it performed in 1991 before Pope John Paul II in the Vatican and leads a portion of the choir in the traditional Latin Mass performed the first Sunday of every month at the San Fernando Mission.
McGrath leads countless music and liturgy workshops, including musician retreats at St. Andrews Benedictine Abbey in Valyermo. She also organized a multidenominational choral festival now in its ninth year.
Born to musician parents, McGrath graduated in 1951 from college in Los Angeles, where she majored in choral conducting, piano and voice. She taught music at the now-defunct Our Lady Queen of Angels High School Seminary in Mission Hills from 1974-1989.
