Kim Mortensen
SCHOOL: Thousand Oaks
SPORT: Cross-country
YEAR: Senior
SEASON AT A GLANCE: Mortensen set seven course records, tied another, won 11 of 15 races and was the Ventura County, Marmonte League and Southern Section Division I champion. She finished second behind Santa Rosa High junior Julia Stamps in the State Division I and Foot Locker West Regional championships.
WEEK AT A GLANCE: Mortensen avenged four losses to Stamps this season by defeating her to win the national championship in San Diego on Saturday. Battling a cold, Stamps, the defending champion, led early on. But Mortensen passed her after a little more than two miles, and Stamps dropped out shortly thereafter. “There were times during races when my legs were tired and she was out in front of me that I thought she was unbeatable,” Mortensen said. “But I always told myself in practice that you never know what could happen in a race.”
