Southeast/Long Beach : Convention Center Expansion Wins Architectural Award
- Share via
The recent expansion of Long Beach Convention Center has won its designers a special award from the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
Judges praised the center’s newer features, including a glass-enclosed concourse that runs the length of the complex.
“This is a very successful and exciting project that puts all other convention centers to shame,” a statement from the AIA jury said.
Convention Center General Manager David Gordon also praised the project’s Atlanta-based design firm, Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback & Associates Inc. He even attributed some of the center’s recent increase in bookings to the two-year expansion project, which included adding 224,000 square feet of exhibit space.
“It’s a striking building,” Gordon said. “You get to see the sky and the ocean. . . .”
