COLLEGE FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : Frazier Wants to Remain a Quarterback

Tommie Frazier, Nebraska’s option quarterback extraordinaire, said he would like the chance to play the position in the NFL.

“It’s something I’ve played since I was 7 years old and I want to continue playing it,” Frazier said this week as he prepares for Tuesday night’s national title game against Florida. “I didn’t want to go through high school and college playing quarterback and then have to switch to a position I’ve never played before.”

If the NFL demands that he switch positions, Frazier said he will weigh other options.

“There’s always the Canadian Football League,” he said. “There’s always the World League. The NFL isn’t everything. If I decided I don’t want to play football anymore then I have my degree to fall back on.”

Nebraska and Florida have met only once previously, in the 1974 Sugar Bowl game. The Cornhuskers won, 13-10, on Mike Coyle’s 39-yard field goal with 1:46 remaining. It was the last Sugar Bowl game played at Tulane Stadium.

How good are these teams? The Cornhuskers and Gators are a combined 23-0 this season, and neither team has really been tested.

“I think it’s unusual to have a couple of teams in the end that are undefeated with at least not one or two squeakers,” Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne said.

Nebraska’s narrowest margin of victory in 1995 was a 35-21 victory against Washington State, while Florida “escaped” with two 11-point victories against Auburn, 49-38, and Florida State, 35-24.
