Messier Moves Into Sixth on the Career Scoring List

Mark Messier reached another milestone and the New York Rangers continued their hot play at home with a 7-4 victory Wednesday night over Montreal.

Messier, who scored his 500th goal earlier this season, had two goals and an assist to move past Bryan Trottier into sixth place on the NHL’s career-scoring list with 1,427 points.

The Rangers got three goals and an assist from Ray Ferraro as they extended their home-ice unbeaten streak to 18 (15-0-3), the longest in 24 seasons at Madison Square Garden. They also had a 15-0-3 streak in 1971-72. The club record is 24 games, set in the 1970-71 season.

Only 24 hours after a 10-0 shellacking by Calgary, Tampa Bay turned the tables and embarrassed Edmonton, 5-0, at Edmonton. Former Oiler Petr Klima scored twice in the second period. . . . Sean Burke stopped the 33 shots he faced as Hartford snapped an eight-game winless streak with a 2-0 victory over Washington on its home ice. Robert Kron and Brendan Shanahan each scored and Burke earned the eighth shutout of his career as Hartford, 0-5-3 since its last win Dec. 15, handed Washington its third shutout of this season. . . . The Devils, winless in their previous 12 road games (0-9-3), matched Colorado defensively and finally ended a string of five scoreless periods when Thomas beat Patrick Roy. . . . John LeClair and Mikael Renberg each scored on assists from linemate Eric Lindros as visiting Philadelphia beat San Jose, 3-1, at San Jose. . . . NHL Notes

Boston defenseman Ray Bourque was voted to the Eastern Conference’s all-star game starting lineup for the ninth time. Joining Bourque in the starting lineup will be center Mario Lemieux and forward Jaromir Jagr of Pittsburgh, forward Brendan Shanahan of Hartford, and defenseman Scott Stevens and goaltender Martin Brodeur of New Jersey. The Western Conference starting lineup will be announced today. . . . James Shapiro, a Boca Raton lawyer intent on having the Florida Panthers remain in the area, has offered to buy the NHL team for $75 million.
