Faces to Watch in ’96 : The Year’s in Their Hands : Well, maybe not just theirs (notice we don’t list Jim Carrey). But these artists and entertainers--some you know, some you don’t--are most likely to make some kind of splash in ’96. Ready? Everybody into the pool. : COMEDY : Jonathan Katz
Jonathan Katz is a stand-up comedian who has become a hit by getting people to lie down.
Actually, it’s not exactly Katz who is laying folks down, but his animated alter ego, “Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist,” the squiggly psychiatrist who does his best to treat his quirky patients while controlling his own whirlwind life. Many of his “patients” are celebrities and fellow comics who lend their voices to the comedy.
Since premiering on Comedy Central, “Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist,” which Katz helped create, hasn’t had much time for the couch. It has picked up two CableACE Awards and also scored Comedy Central’s first Emmy when Katz won this year for best voice-over performance.
Now Katz, 49, has been snagged by DreamWorks SKG to develop two series pilots for network television--an animated comedy for ABC and a live-action show for NBC.
This is one doctor who definitely is in.
