Jets Surprise Red Wings, 6-4

Tim Cheveldae couldn’t hide the special satisfaction that came from beating his former teammates. Not to mention handing the Detroit Red Wings a rare home loss.

Cheveldae stopped 43 shots and Winnipeg converted four of seven power-play chances as the Jets defeated the Red Wings, 6-4, Monday night at Detroit, ending Detroit’s 14-game home unbeaten streak.

Keith Tkachuk scored twice for the Jets, with his second goal breaking a 4-4 tie in the third period.

“It does feel good,” said Cheveldae, once groomed to become Detroit’s top goaltender but instead traded to Winnipeg in 1994. “It’s been a long time since Detroit lost at home.”

Tampa Bay 3, Montreal 3--Alexander Selivanov of Tampa Bay scored his second goal of the game with 51 seconds left in the third period at Montreal.

The Lightning had pulled goaltender Jean-Claude Bergeron for a sixth attacker when Shawn Burr slid the puck across the crease for Selivanov to tap his 19th goal of the season into an open side.

Pittsburgh 8, Vancouver 5--Mario Lemieux scored his 36th goal and set up two others at Pittsburgh.

Lemieux has points in all but one of his 35 games this season, and has 25 multi-point games. Markus Naslund and Bryan Smolinski each scored twice for the Penguins.

Florida 5, San Jose 2--Johan Garpenlov and Bill Lindsay each scored twice and John Vanbiesbrouck stopped 27 shots at San Jose.
