The California Coastal Commission is scheduled to vote today on a request from several groups--including the city of Los Angeles--to restore and enhance Ballona Lagoon in Venice.
The nonprofit Ballona Lagoon Marine Preserve, the California Coastal Conservancy and the city of Los Angeles have asked the commission for permission to landscape the banks with native plants, improve public access and dredge a portion of the lagoon.
Coastal Commission staff has recommended that it approve the project with several conditions--one of which would postpone the dredging until the groups submit a plan to protect birds whose habitats would be destroyed.
