Police Storefront Opens for Business

A downtown Ventura storefront police substation will open today with an open house and celebration.

Hailed by downtown and beach merchants and residents as a needed addition to the community, the storefront at 309 E. Main St. is a joint effort between Ventura police and area neighborhoods.

“It’s not just a crime-watch type of deal,” said Tim O’Neil, president of the Downtown Ventura Assn. “This is an opportunity for the police to be reconnected with the community. It’s almost nostalgic--thinking of the officer on the beat. They will get to know us and we will get to know them. It’s real exciting.”

The association has led a fund-raising campaign and today will present a check for more than $7,000 for rent and operating costs at the substation, O’Neil said.

Office furniture, and architectural and design services are also among contributions.

The Police Department will pay the salaries of Officers Terri Vujea and Ron Rojo, who staff the storefront substation, while area merchants and residents will raise money for the $650 monthly rent, utilities and other supplies.

The open house will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. at the substation. An awards ceremony to thank sponsors, organizers, donors and other residents and merchants who have contributed will be held at 6 p.m. at Franky’s Place.
