TAKE A HIKE: Although more famous for its freeways, the Valley is within easy reach of more than 1,000 miles of hiking and biking trails. . . . When it’s not raining, cool temperatures and clear vistas make this the best time of year to hike--or scan the night skies from a mountain turnout.
ROOM, PLUS A VIEW: The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area--a mosaic of state and federal preserves--has some 600 miles of trails. On clear days, Catalina, the Channel Islands and whales cruising southward to Baja may be seen from coastal bluffs. . . . When completed, the recreation area’s best-known path--the Backbone Trail--will run 70 miles. Fifty-eight miles are available now.
