GM, UAW Reach Tentative Pact, Avert Strike: The agreement was reached 45 minutes before a Thursday strike deadline set by the United Auto Workers union at the Delphi Interior & Lighting systems plant in Livonia, Mich. The plant makes interior door panels and vinyl tops for General Motors Corp. cars and trucks. A statement from the company and union Local 174 said the agreement would allow continuing “joint efforts to improve competitiveness” at the plant, one of several component operations GM has said is not profitable. Sources said the agreement provides for several hundred more union jobs at the plant at least in the short term. The plant’s 1,000 UAW members will vote on the agreement Monday.
