Juan Acevedo; Activist, California Youth Authority Official

Juan Acevedo, 82, social worker and community activist who was the first Latino appointed to the California Youth Authority. A graduate of UCLA, Acevedo worked as an executive with the Boy Scouts and was director of a settlement house. He was named to the youth authority by former Gov. Edmund G. “Pat” Brown Sr. and was a founding member of the Hispanic Advisory Council to the Los Angeles Police Commission. He served for 22 years as the executive director of the Narcotics Prevention Project in East Los Angeles. In the 1960s, Acevedo was also active on the Council of Mexican-American Affairs.
