Abdur-Rahim Leads Cal Over Washington State
Freshman Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 18 of his game-high 32 points in the second half as No. 25 California survived a late Washington State comeback to win, 87-79, Thursday night at Pullman, Wash.
Washington State, 8-6 overall and 1-5 in the Pacific 10, had forward Mark Hendrickson back in the lineup for the first time in nearly a month and he had 27 points and 14 rebounds. The Cougars trailed by 10 points with 6:32 remaining but closed within two with 20 seconds to go.
The Golden Bears, 6-1 in the Pac-10 and 11-4 overall, then got four free throws and a buzzer-beating dunk by Tremaine Fowlkes, making his season debut after an NCAA-imposed suspension, to seal the victory. Cal is off to its best Pac-10 start in 32 years.
No. 13 Arizona 66, Oregon State 59--Ben Davis scored 18 points and Joe McLean added 16 as the Wildcats held on for a surprisingly tough victory at Corvallis, Ore.
The Wildcats (14-3, 4-2) beat the Beavers (3-12, 1-5) for the 12th consecutive time and the 23rd time in their last 24 meetings.
Arizona State 74, Oregon 73--Rodger Farrington’s layup with three seconds to play gave the Sun Devils a 74-73 comeback victory over the Ducks at Eugene, Ore.
The Sun Devils (6-8, 1-5) broke a six-game losing streak to earn their first conference win of the season. The Ducks (9-8, 2-4), who led by as many as 11 points in the first half, lost their fourth consecutive Pac-10 game.
Washington 74, Stanford 71--Mark Sanford scored 24 points as the Huskies matched their best start since 1985 by holding off a late rally by the Cardinal at Seattle.
Washington (11-4, 4-2) ended a four-game losing streak against the Cardinal. Stanford (10-5, 4-3) shot only 37% from the field.
